Her father was shot when the family tried to flee, and her mother couldn't bring herself to leave him as he lay there wounded, but Laura grabbed Celeste and ran because she wanted to keep her safe. So, Laura believes they are dead, as they've been with the Sect for several months... Probably close to a year. o3o" She and Celeste just gave up on finding their parents again, to save themselves from more heartbreak.
